Site Management Training Scheme CIOB

Summary:

This programme is designed specifically to meet the needs of those currently in, or training for a position in construction site management. Achieving the Site Management Certificate/Diploma provides evidence to employers and client organisations that you have successfully completed a nationally recognised level of study. On a personal level the qualification enables Site Managers to gain additional knowledge which will assist them to carry out their role with greater confidence and effectiveness.

You should either have: at least two years experience on site above the level of charge-hand, and experienced work with some responsibility, or have successfully completed the Level 3 Certificate in Site Supervisors Studies. Before enrolling you will be required to attend an interview panel. The panel must be satisfied that you have the motivation and commitment to benefit from the course. The interview will also help the course team to tailor the course according to the needs of the group.

The course consists of one mandatory module and thirteen core modules. The mandatory Module 7, the CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme, must be successfully completed as part of the Certificate in Site Management. The remaining modules will be delivered on a revolving cycle of two years as the completion of any six core modules plus the mandatory module, will complete studies for the Certificate in Site Management.

The emphasis of the course is on group participation and mutual learning, under the guidance and supervision of the course tutors for each subject area. You will be encouraged to make full use of the resources available at the college, which include comprehensive IT and Learning Resource Services. There are no formal exams at the end of each module. Instead you will be required to submit project work and subject assignments for assessment.

You will gain a level 4 Certificate in Site Management after one year and The Diploma in Site Management after two years. Further study could eventually lead to full corporate membership of the Chartered Institute of Building (MCIOB).

Details of each module are outlined below:
Module 1- Industry and Management
Provides an overview of the construction industry and concentrates on understanding the functions and roles of the various external organisations and project members which contribute to a successful project team. Also explains the relevant aspects of an organisation's marketing policies and procedures, including how to maintain a positive corporate image and achieve good client and public relations.

Module 2 - Project PlanningHow to identify and obtain information in order to determine effective methods for the programming of projects.

Module 3 - Organising and Resourcing ProjectsLearn how to set up site works including: establishing on-site administration systems, obtaining the appropriate resources for the project, assigning responsibilities, providing information on methods and programmes, obtaining and passing on information for the execution and completion of the works.

Module 4 - Project Monitoring and Control
Teaches you how to monitor the progress of the works and the supply and use of materials and plant. Also covers the monitoring of expenditure against budget and recording information to enable financial recovery.

Module 5 - Managing the Quality of Site WorkUnderstanding and maintaining quality systems, liaison with others in the construction team and carrying out any corrective action as necessary.

Module 6 - Managing Sub-Contractors
Planning, co-ordinating and controlling sub-contract operations.
Module 7 - CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (Mandatory Module)
Teaches you how to manage health and safety on site in accordance with current legal provisions. Develop an understanding of responsibilities and accountability for site health, safety and welfare. The CITB SMSTS certificate may also be available to those who complete this module.

Module 8 - Site Surveying and LevellingEstablishing and maintaining dimensional requirements for a building project. Establishing and checking site lines and levels.

Module 9 - ComputingOperating simple business computer systems related to site management. Critical appraisal of the role of computers in site management.

Module 10 - Managing PeopleUsing and managing personnel procedures and interpersonal relationships within the Site Manager's organisation. Establishing and maintaining constructive relationships with external bodies.

Module 11- Developing PeopleHow to develop and improve the performance of individuals, teams and the Site Manager; personal effectiveness.

Module 12 - Improving Managerial SkillsDesigned to improve your skills in verbal and written communication, negotiation, problem solving and stress management. Plus chairing and participating in effective meetings.

Module 13 - Contractual and Legal ResponsibilitiesProcedures to ensure compliance with relevant contractual conditions. Procedures involved in developing or preventing contractual claims. Assessment of the implications of contractual conditions on site works.

Module 14 - Estimating and Measuring WorkAn appreciation of the estimating function and how the Site Manager can work with and assist the Estimator and contractor's Quantity Surveyor.

Student membership of the CIOB is a requirement for course members, but as a concession Site Management students pay the minimum fee. Once the Diploma in Site Management has been awarded you may apply for Associate membership of the CIOB, provided you meet the experience requirements.
