Class sizes are ,however, small enough to offer a supportive learning environment where students are able to develop close working relationships with staff.

As the programme proceeds greater emphasis is placed on the student developing as an independent learner, refining their own approaches and challenging preconceived ideas in the later stages of the course.

Course Code: F5259-G5259 Course Length: For FdA graduates this will be a one year programme consisting entirely of Level 6 modules. With an HND the first year/stage of the course (60 credits) is delivered at Level 5 on a part-time basis followed by Level 3 modules (120 credits) on a full-time basis. Entry Requirements:

A pass in a relevant HND or Foundation Degree or equivalent credits from other recognised HE courses.

Assessment:

Mainly through written assignments/reports; Some presentations; time constrained exercises both open and closed book and conventional essays.

Academic Progression:

Some graduates enter the professions or go on to postgraduate studies, often in teaching. Many enter the service sector where management and 'people' skills are highly valued and study for chartered status - CIPD - CIMA - CIM.

Career Progression:

Into general management in the Hospitality, Tourism and Leisure Industries as well as other service sectors, often by way of joining the employer's own management training scheme as a graduate.

Full Description:

Level 6 Modules are taken on a full-time basis (normally two days a week - 30 weeks)

Semester 1 & 2

  • Service Quality Management
  • Strategic Management
  • Ethics and Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Special Events and Festivals
  • Sustainable Development
  • Dissertation/Project

Plus a further two optional modules from:

  • International Tourism Project
  • Gastronomy
  • Contemporary Issues

Level 5 Modules

as part of an HND progression include:

  • Advanced Higher Learning and Research Skills
  • Small Business Management and Finance
  • Work based Learning 2 (project)

Methods of Teaching and Learning

A mix of workshops, lectures, tutorials and self directed study, again with emphasis on business practice.
