The course is based around general areas of administration and business, secretarial skills, the legal environment and key concepts of computing and its uses in the workplace.

Course content

This course includes:

  • OCR Certificate in Administration (Business Professional) Level 3
  • OCR Certificate in Text Processing (Business Professional) - includes text production, audio transcription, document presentation, word processing, and speed keying
  • ILEX Certificate for Legal Secretaries Level 2
  • ECDL Essentials and Extra (word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, internet and email)
  • BTEC Award in WorkSkills

Administration – you will develop the knowledge, skills and understanding of complex administrative functions and activities, which will enable you to carry out a range of non-routine administrative tasks in a senior job role, to the standard required by business. You will also develop your ability to work effectively in a wide variety of business environments, both independently and within a team, and to review, evaluate and develop your own administrative practice.

Text Processing – will provide you with the skills and knowledge to produce a variety of standard business documents, by both copy typing and using audio equipment, which you will need to work in a modern office environment. You will also learn to touch type, enabling you to develop and improve your speed. You will work at your own pace, which will create opportunities to achieve the qualification at a higher level.

ILEX – will give you the skills and knowledge that you will need to get a job in a legal office, either as a secretary or as an administrator.

  • Working in a Legal Environment – will teach you the role and responsibilities of the legal secretary and look at the different organisational structures of a legal office. It will also help you to understand how to work as a member of a legal team and the importance of establishing and maintaining customer relationships in the legal environment.
  • Legal Word Processing – will teach you how to create, amend and transcribe a wide variety of legal documents within the following departments: Civil and Criminal Litigation, Conveyancing, Corporate, Family and Probate.
  • Proofreading – will teach you the importance of accuracy and how to identify errors in legal and business documents.

ECDL – The European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is an internationally recognised qualification which will enable you to demonstrate your competence in computer skills and includes units on word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, email and internet, security, managing the computer and improving productivity using IT.

WorkSkills – this qualification will give you the knowledge to help you when seeking employment. You will be guided through the creation of a CV, and will be given help on how to complete an application form, write a covering letter and prepare for an interview.

Teaching and assessment

You will study in bright, modern classrooms, use up-to-date software packages that are commonly used in business, receive full tutorial support and have access to online resources.

Assessment is by course work/assignments, which are marked by teaching staff and verified by the exam boards. Text Processing and ILEX Proofreading are external examinations, held throughout the year.

Entry requirements

AS levels or a good GCSE profile or appropriate Level 2 qualifications. English Language GCSE A* - C or Level 2 Functional Skills is also required.

Progression

Employment in an administrative or secretarial role, in either a legal or business environment.

Dates and times

This course begins in September, and runs for three-and-a-half days each week. The duration of this course is one year.
