Course Overview

• equip learners with the transferable skills that will enable them to progress and to move within the creative media industry

As the qualification follows on from Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Nationals, it is expected that many learners will see the Higher Nationals as a natural progression from that qualification.

Aims of the Qualification
This qualification aims to meet the needs of the above rationale by:
• providing an educational foundation for a variety of technical, creative and managerial careers in the creative media industries, specifically moving image, journalism and games design
• providing an educational foundation for progression to a higher level course
• providing flexibility in the content and structure of the qualification
• developing in learners the skills, knowledge and understanding which will enable them to make an immediate contribution in employment
• developing in learners skills, knowledge and understanding in specialist pathways directly relevant to careers in moving image, broadcast journalism orgames design
• developing in learners skills, knowledge and understanding in a wide range of creative and technical areas to encourage multi-skilling and to motivate future studies and career development
• developing in learners the skills and personal qualities necessary for success in professional life

The College offers three streams of this course


BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Creative Media Production (Journalism)
Tutors with journalistic track records will provide an understanding of the essential theory and practical skills associated with modern broadcast journalism, focusing on a cross-platform approach. You will complete live and pre-recorded programmes for broadcast, FM and print outlets. You will focus on interview and presentation techniques along with voice coaching for various broadcasts formats. There will be a thorough grounding in ledia law, ethics and public affairs.

Edexcel BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Creative Media Production (Moving Image)

This is a creative and production oriented programme designed for those who wish to enter the media industry. The course aims to provide the local film and television industry with the writers, directors, cinematographers and producers of the future. You willbe engaged in the making of documentaries, drama and advertising films. In the course of this work, you will have
opportunities to explore a wide range of industry roles. The aim of the programme is to increase your creativity, technical competence and autonomy. The HND in Moving Image has close links with local and international film makers. A member of the NI Skillset Media Academy, it is recognised by the industry as a good starting point for a career in the media Industry. This course will allow access to our state-of-the art
studio facilities.

Edexcel BTEC Level 5 HND Diploma in Creative Media Production (Computer Game Design)
Computer game development is now a multi-billion pound industry and is one of the most exciting and innovative areas in computing today. This course aims to provide you with the design skills and expertise required for a career in this industry. The full-time two year course covers sixteen units that include: Game Design; Computer Game Engines; 3D Modelling; 3D Animation; 3D Environments; Level Design; 2D Digital Graphics; and project based skills amongst others.

Additional Information
HND Broadcast Journalism - Students will be examined through continuous assessment, which will involve a series of real-life assignments, including a trip to Parliament Buildings, Stormont; industrial work placements; running the print edition of a college magazine; running the college online and fm radio stations; running a college online television station, as well as an online newspaper. There will be opportunities to link with journalism students from other colleges in the European Union. The course already has established links with colleges in Hungary and the Republic of Ireland. Corish Film Productions sponsors the annual Student of the Year Awards presented at the graduation ceremonies. Students will have regular tutorials with their personal advisor of studies to monitor their progress throughout their programme of study with the college.

HND Computer Game Design - Students will be examined through continuous assessment. This will involve a series of assignments working on industry driven briefs, work experience, as well as group and individual projects. Industry experts will also be invited to speak to the students during the course. Entry Requirements
Requirements For Guidance purposes: Given historic interest in this course, it is anticipated that a minimum of 200 tariff points will be required

Where will this course take you
Students with an HND in Broadcast Journalism have gained employment within the mainstream journalism industry, public relations, political lobbying and in community journalism. Students have also been able to ‘top up’ their HNDs with access to a relevant honours degree programme in journalism, public relations and media.

Students with an HND in Computer Games Design may progress to employment in industry, or gain admission to the second year of university honours degree courses.

Students with an HND in Moving Image may progress to employment in the media industry, or gain admission to the second year of university honours degree courses.
