While it offers an attractive business opportunity for operators in the move to triple play and subscriber churn reduction, there are a number of decisions to be made as various technologies and architectures exist.
The course gives a high-level overview of packet switched voice technologies. Starting with the principles of the circuit switched PSTN network, the course leads you into the world of packet switched voice services. It covers some available standards and protocols such as H.323, SIP, EuroPacketCable and EuroPacketCable Multimedia and how they interface with different standards and networks. Important requirements such as Quality of Service, with the focus on the access network are discussed. Finally, it touches on some other voice transport mechanisms.

PART 2: PACKET SWITCHED NETWORKS
- General architecture, packet switching, voice packets and QoS.
PART 3: VOIP STANDARDS
- H. 323, SIP, EuroPacketCable.
PART 4: INTERWORKING
- SIP and SS7, EuroPacketCable and SS7, SIGTRAN, session border controllers.
PART 5: CODECS
- Overview and comparison of various codecs.
PART 6: MEDIA STREAMS
- PSTN versus IP, RTP and RTCP, calculation of transmission rates.
PART 7: QUALITY OF SERVICE
- QoS in the access network, SIP, EuroPacketCable, EuroPacketCable Multimedia; QoS in the backbone; MOS, PSQM, PESQ.
PART 8: VOIP ISSUES
- Silence suppression, ISDN support, assessing impact of voice on data networks, billing.
PART 9: OTHER VOICE TRANSPORTS
- VoDSL: CVoDSL, VoATM over DSL; VoIP over DSL, VoWLAN; standards situation.
Prerequisites
Basic understanding of (inter)networking. Basic knowledge of access technologies.
