If you have time for reading before the course, please be aware
that few eras of British History have spawned so many meretricious
films, TV programmes and books as this one. There are also many
very specialised books – e.g. about Music Hall, railways, organised
sports, or particular industries - which do not properly
contextualise their subjects in the broader social history of the
period.
Recent BBC dramatisations of Charles Dickens’ novels give a
reasonably accurate impression of the social conditions and
relationships of the early Victorian period. What the Victorians
Did For Us is a useful book - based on a TV programme by Adam
Hart-Davis - about technological and scientific developmen
