What is the course about?It will introduce deaf awareness and communication strategies.
The will include finger spelling and the signs needed to greet
someone and introduce yourself using British Sign Language.
The content and outcomes of the course will be discussed with you
and may be adapted to meet your needs and those of the group. As a
guide, by the end of the course you should be able to:
Have a basic knowledge of deaf awareness
Begin to produce and recognise the finger spelt alphabet.
Greet someone and introduce yourself using British Sign
Language.
Take part in simple conversation about yourself.

Who is the course for?
It aims to give an introduction to finger spelling, deaf
awareness and British Sign Language.
Who is the course for and what level is it?
This course is for complete beginners who have no previous
knowledge of British Sign Language. If you are unsure of your
level, please contact your local centre for further
assistance.
What is your approach?
There will be tutor demonstrations and handouts will be provided
as helpful reminders of the signs. You will practise signing
individually, in pairs and small groups through games and
activities.
What can I do next?
You could enrol on a British Sign Language course leading to the
Signature Level 1 Award in British Sign Language. These courses are
available at a number of locations in West Sussex.

What will I need?
You will have an opportunity to maintain an Individual Learning
Plan and your tutor will discuss your progress and achievement with
you throughout the course.
What will I need for the first session?
Bring along a pen for note taking and a folder for handouts.
