This short course is delivered entirely online and introduces the key elements of setting up a fashion business.

Setting up a company can be an exciting and daunting prospect; many will dream of owning their own business and many succeed, but many others fail. This course deals with introducing the most important aspects to consider, including setting up a company, introducing what should be included in a draft business plan, how to research a market and what goes into creating, selling, producing and marketing a collection. The skills acquired on this course could also be applied to a number of other product areas.

Fashion terminologies are introduced on this course and you will also gain an understanding of the analysis, planning, theory and practicalities involved in setting up a fashion business or your own label.

This course encourages you to think carefully about the expansive issues of going into business and how the wider economic situation can affect the fashion industry. During times of competitiveness, financial hardship and technological development, fashion entrepreneurs need to be innovative, resourceful and flexible in order to succeed. This course is designed to help you to begin to understand all the considerations that should come before you set up your business.

The course encourages you to have confidence in your business idea by carrying out the necessary checks and enquiries; by researching through case studies of how others have succeeded in the fashion industry, you will begin to learn how to spot a gap in the market or come up with an idea that is based on sound research.

You will have the opportunity to work with an experienced tutor who will assist you with your understanding of the subject, facilitate and encourage discussion and provide feedback on your progress. You will have access to a range of online resources such as guest lectures, live critiques, podcasts, e-books, interviews and films created with industry professionals.

You will also be encouraged to attend relevant exhibitions, trade events and shows wherever possible.

Course materials will be available through the Solent Online Learning Portal| and you will work independently, at your own pace, on a series of exercises designed to encourage a self-reflective approach to your personal knowledge development. Group discussion and a sharing of knowledge, experience and ideas will be actively encouraged in order to create an online ‘community of learning’ within which you will develop a network of colleagues.

A final assessment will take place at the end of the twelve-week course, for which you will be required to submit electronically a final piece of work.

Where possible and appropriate you will be encouraged to relate this unit to your own working practice.
