Course Description

If you want to work in schools in a Teaching Support Role, then this is the course for you.

The government are pushing hard to achieve a better adult to child ratio in classrooms and money is being pumped into schools across the country to enable them to take on more Teaching Assistants, Classroom Assistants and Support Assistants, as this is viewed as the most cost-effective and quickest way to improve staffing situations.

Our Distance Learning "Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools" course is suitable for all support staff roles. The course aims to enable learners to understand roles and responsibilities of all those involved in supporting teaching and learning in schools. It will prepare you to support the Teacher and deliver the curriculum within the school as well as developing skills that will help children and young people to develop self-esteem, independence and gain the skills of learning. The course aims to deliver an understanding of the importance of positive relationships within a school.

The Level 3 Award is made up of a number of different units of assessment which sit within the QCF (Qualifications and Credit Framework).  When you complete a unit successfully, you will gain a certain number of credits.  A credit is based on how long an average learner would take to complete a unit, and one credit is roughly equal to 10 hours of learning.

If you subsequently wanted to progress to the Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, the four units in this course count towards that qualification, so that you will not then be required to retake these particular units.

On completion of all the mandatory units, you will achieve a Level 3 Award , listed on the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) Database allocating 12 Credits (Qualification Number: 501/0368/4).

Assessment

This course is knowledge based, and so does not require any hands on experience or work placement within a school.

There are four units requiring a range of responses, including descriptive answers.

You should start by familiarising yourself with the course, its content, and its requirements and consider how you will meet these.  You should also think how you will structure your time to enable you to complete it.

When working through a unit, you should first read through it fully, ignoring references to questions that you find in the text at this stage.  When you have done this, you should go back to the beginning of the unit once more, read through the text, and this time answer the referenced questions as you encounter them.
