Course Code: MMACLD_02

Masters Level Module

This module focuses on the use of simulation in clinical education. It provides students with the opportunity to explore the implications of using simulations for teaching and learning, and in so doing to deepen their understanding of the role that simulation can play in clinical education and training. The module explores different theoretical approaches to learning and teaching most relevant to simulation-based education, and examines their pedagogical implications in the instance of simulation use. It also considers important theoretical debates around simulation in educational settings, including the transfer of knowledge from simulated to rea…

It also considers important theoretical debates around simulation in educational settings, including the transfer of knowledge from simulated to real settings; provides the opportunity to examine how simulation technologies are designed; and examines the different methodologies for evaluating their effectiveness. Key questions for this module are: how does learning with simulation technologies transfer to sites of 'real' clinical practice? How is clinical reality constructed in simulated settings? How do we design pedagogically informed simulation scenarios? Teaching takes place face-to-face over five days (on a Wednesday) in the spring term.

The module is taught by leading researchers in the field of simulation and educational technology and will make extensive use of empirical research. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss and reflect on their own experience of teaching and learning, through group tasks and class discussions. By the end of the module, participants will be able to draw on a range of theoretical ideas, and key debates to inform their teaching and learning through simulation, together with primary methods of evaluation.

The module is taught over 5 whole days, one day every two weeks between January and March. Teaching sessions start at 10 a.m. and finish at 5 p.m. Dates for 2012/13 are: 9th January, 23rd January, 6th February, 20th February, 6th March.

The module can be taken as a short course. It can also be taken as a component of a number of MA programmes at the Institute of Education.
