Summary
This course prepares you to work in a supervised capacity with children and their families in a variety of settings and environments within the sector of Children’s Services. Some of the things you will learn about are; Children and Play, the Developing Child, Safe, Healthy, Nurturing Environments for Children. You will put your skills into practice two days a week on a supervised work placement. The qualification is split into three stages, Award, Certificate and Diploma. You will progress through the Award and Certificate to complete the Diploma allowing you to work as an Early Years Practitioner.

Entry Requirements
- A minimum of 164 GCSE points including English (at Grade D or above).
- A GCSE Grade D or above is recommended in Maths.
- A successful HRC Disclosure and Barring Service check
- You must demonstrate suitability to work with children and
adults, show empathy and a keen interest in working with and
helping others, along with good communication and interpersonal
skills.
Applications are welcome from male and female students.
What will I be doing on the course?
Units will include:
- Unit 1. An introduction to working with children
- Unit 2. The developing child
- Unit 3. Safe, healthy and nurturing environments for children
- Unit 4. Children and play
- Unit 5. Communication and professional skills within child care and education
- Unit 6. The child care practitioner in the workplace
- Unit 9. Supporting Children with Additional Needs
How will I be assessed?
Some units will be assessed by written assignment, but you will
also need to prepare portfolios of evidence for Units 5 and 6. Unit
3 is assessed by a Multiple Choice Question paper. Students are
also assessed on their performance in the workplace.

What can I do next?
- If you complete this course, you can apply to study a two year course such as the Level 3 Award / Certificate / Diploma in Child Care and Education or BTEC National in Health and Social Care. You may also apply for the one year Diploma for the Children and Young Peoples Workforce Level 3 course.
- This Level 2 qualification prepares you to work in a supervised capacity, with children and their families in a variety of settings and environments within the sector of Children’s Services.
Additional Activities
You may also have the opportunity to achieve qualifications in
the Functional Skills areas Maths and English. You can, depending
on your prior achievement, resit GCSE English and/or Maths (evening
class). You may also undertake First Aid, Basic Food Hygiene and
Health and Safety Training. You will have the chance to take part
in additional activities such as charity fund raising and exciting
trips and visits.
