The Foundation degree Supporting Teaching and Learning was developed by the University of Greenwich in conjunction with its Partner Colleges (Greenwich Community College being one of these).

It is designed to enable those working as Teaching or Learning Support Assistants in schools to enhance their knowledge of educational systems and practice, and improve their skills in the classroom. What does the course include?

The Foundation degree Supporting Teaching and Learning was developed by the University of Greenwich in conjunction with its Partner Colleges (Greenwich Community College being one of these).

It is designed to enable those working as Teaching or Learning Support Assistants in schools to enhance their knowledge of educational systems and practice, and improve their skills in the classroom. The programme covers a range of current, theoretical thinking that can be applied and practised in the work-place, then evaluated and analysed in written assignments.

This programme is for students prepared to study at university level; it is not a practical skills-based programme. Students will explore topics in the following areas:

In the first year:

  • Active Education
  • Learner and Education
  • Supporting the Curriculum
  • Professional Practice Portfolio

In the second year:

  • Social Pedagogy
  • Supporting Learners with Additional Educational Needs
  • Understanding Psychological, Social and Emotional aspects of Behaviour
  • Negotiated Professional Investigation

The Foundation degree in Supporting Teaching and Learning comprises 240 credits, of which 120 are completed at Level 4 and 120 at Level 5.

The programme lasts for two academic years, delivered as an evening, part time programme. Teaching takes place on one evening per week from 4:00pm to 9:15pm. The year is divided into two semesters of 15 weeks each, with 60 credits taught in each semester.

What do I need to get on this course?

English GCSE Grade A-CMaths GCSE Grade A-C
An A-Level or equivalent (Grade A-C) or a minimum of one year experience as a teaching assistant or support assistant. You may have already completed an education related NVQ at Level 3.

You must be employed or volunteering in a teaching assistant capacity for at least two days a week and should be experienced in their role.

You will complete an initial assessment and will need to demonstrate Level 2/3 literacy skills (by way of an assessment). You will also attend an interview with the programme leader.

How will I be assessed?

Assessment will be through a variety of methods including: essay writing; presentations; research projects; portfolio compilation. Assessment is completed by your lecturers, through peer review and personal self-reflection. There are no timedexaminations.

Where does it lead?

If you successfully complete the Foundation Degree in Supporting Teaching and Learning, you are guaranteed a place at the University of Greenwich for the final, third year of the Bachelor of Arts programme in either Education Studies, or Childhood Studies.

The teaching of these programmes usually takes place on just one day per week, therefore enabling you to continue employment in schools for up to four days a week. Once you have obtained a Bachelor’s degree, you can then apply to join the PGCE programme at the University of Greenwich, or any other provider, to obtain full Qualified Teacher Status in Primary Education.
