The course builds on the Foundation Degree which together provides a thorough understanding of the physical principles underlying collisions and vehicle dynamics and how mathematics can be used to describe and model collision scenarios. The course also helps you to understand how modern technology is used in forensic collision investigation. A strong emphasis is placed on the practical use of technology to investigate real-world collisions.
The course provides an understanding and use of a wide range of hardware and software such as accelerometers and bespoke software for the analysis of damage to vehicles as well as techniques for the production of 2D plans and animated 3D models.

Teaching and assessment
A variety of techniques are used throughout the course with an emphasis on lectures, supporting tutorials and practical experimentation.
The course is based with AiTS in Gloucestershire although a considerable proportion of the course is presented online with video sessions and the study of course notes. Student-centered learning takes place through the research and presentation of findings, report writing, individual and group assignments and practical work-based exercises for the development of skills and understanding. Multiple choice phase tests, short answer tests, written assignments and exams are all used to assess your knowledge.

Work experience and placements
This course requires a considerable commitment to work based learning. As such it is ideally suited to those who already hold employment within the industry.
Work placements will be sought for students who are not currently employed. AiTS can help but cannot guarantee to secure employment positions or work placements.
Graduate careers
This course provides the necessary theoretical knowledge and understanding to perform work as a forensic road collision investigator. A considerable proportion of investigators start work for the police service investigating and reporting on fatal and serious injury collisions. A growing number are employed as consultants, providing support to the civil and criminal courts.

A substantial proportion of this course is delivered via distance and online learning and can be studied from the comfort of home.
You will benefit from the facilities of AiTS in Gloucestershire when undertaking direct teaching and during the practical sessions. This involves practical testing on an airfield, use of collision investigation hardware and software technologies. In addition you will be a student of DMU with access to all the teaching and learning facilities on offer.
