urban, tourist and energy changes, with the contemporary strand of
sustainability linking all units. A field visit to Snowdonia to
look at tourism, a visit to Liverpool to look at urban regeneration
and a guided tour of a power station provides support for this
unit.
A2 Level modules:
F763: Global Issues. Students study Environmental Issues (earth
hazards) and Economic Issues (globalization and population and
resources). The examination features data response and essay style
questions.
F764: Geographical Skills. Students develop fieldwork studies
(local river courses) in the summer term (following AS
examinations) and this forms a detailed case study looking at
planning, data collection, analysis and evaluation of their data,
which the examination tests by two essays. Additionally students
are examined on a range of fieldwork methods and analysis
techniques (eg. GIS technology).
A number of guest speakers and lectures are arranged and
suggested through the course for students to develop wider
knowledge.
The course is demanding, requiring literacy skills for essay
work, analytical skills for researching case studies and
mathematical skills for statistical analysis of data. Commitment is
vital for success and f ieldwork is an essential component of the
course.
To aid students’ achievement and progression Coleg Cambria is committed to providing opportunities to develop and accredit the Key Skills. The following Key Skills are delivered as part of this A level course: AS IOLP level 3. A2: Communication level 3.
How you will gain the qualification
Internal assessments will focus on the use of past examination
questions for realistic and accurate assessment. External

no coursework element but these skills are assessed via the A2 F764
module written examination.
Weighting of each module within the qualification:
AS modules:
F761 90 minute written examination: 50% of AS grade 25% of A2
grade
F762 90 minute written examination: 50% of AS grade 25% of A2
grade
A2 modules:
F763 150 minute written examination: 30% of A2 grade
F764 90 minute written examination (with a focus on fieldwork):
20% of A2 grade.
There will be internal mock examinations to provide realistic examination practice.
What qualifications you need
College entry requirements:
Students wishing to study AS/A levels at Coleg Cambria require a
minimum of 6 GCSEs at grade C or better including GCSE English
Language.
Subject Entry Requirements:
Students wishing to join AS Level Geography should also have
GCSE Geography with at least a Grade C in the subject; other
associated subjects such as Humanities or Environmental Science can
be acceptable alternatives and if you have not studied GCSE
Geography as a separate subject, it may be that you could join our
course but please discuss both of these with the subject tutors
before enrolling. In addition, students should have GCSE
Mathematics at grade C or better as AS/A2 Level Geography involves
using a range of basic statistical techniques. A minimum GCSE
English grade C is also essential as essay and report-writing is an
important part of the course. As Geography is also a science a
grade C in GCSE Science is preferred.
For progression from AS to A2 a grade E is required in the AS
Level qualification and students should have undertaken the
programme of field visits during the summer term after the AS
examinations.
It is expected that students start the course with the intention
of carrying on into A2.
Geography can be usefully combined with almost any other area of AS/A level study; and it also combines well with some non-GCE courses, although you should check that a chosen combination doesn’t reduce chances of entry to a preferred degree course or career area.
Where to next
A Level Geography is accepted as a recognized academic
qualification for entrance to all Higher Education institutions.
