Description

The first aim of this course is to study and evaluate the legal processes and procedures that operate in this country. Secondly we aim to encourage you to challenge the law and its systems. Then we ask you to critically analyse and apply criminal law.

The course starts with an investigation into trial by jury and then proceeds to evaluate the effectiveness of the law making processes. You will also learn how the civil and criminal courts operate and the powers available to them. The A2 course considers the Law relating to criminal activity, from murder to muggings and from battery to burglary. Finally, defences such as intoxication, consent and insanity are examined.

This course would suit anyone with an interest in Law, as an insight into a legal career or as a pathway to University. During the course you will have the opportunity to visit all the major courts, from the Magistrates in Stockport to the Appeal courts in London.

AS Level – 2 Modules

  • Sources of Law -looks at how statutes, precedents, EU law and by-laws are made.
  • English Legal System - looks at the courts from the Magistrates all the way to the European Court of Justice. We also look at the work of the the Police, Lawyers and Judges.

A2 Level – 2 Modules

  • Criminal Law -  Basic principals of criminal law, homicide, non-fatal offences and theft related crimes are studied. The defences of insanity, consent, intoxication, self-defence, and duress are examined in depth.
  • Criminal Law Special Study - source material on criminal law cases are studied in greater depth. Synoptically examined by written, seen material.

Examinations
There is no coursework. The AS modules exams consist of short, descriptive writing with some simple evaluation. The A2 module exams consist of one essay, one problem type questions and evaluation of criminal events and incidents. The final synoptic exam has a seen source paper, which students can prepare for weeks in advance.
